During a plumbing emergency, stop the water first, then stay away from anything electrical that is wet, move belongings out of harm’s way, and take photos of the damage. With those steps done, call a plumber and explain exactly what you are seeing.

Stop the Water

Use the shutoff valve on the fixture if it has one. For a burst pipe or a leak you cannot trace, close the main water valve. It is usually near the meter where the water line enters the home. In a co-op or apartment, ask building staff where the shutoff is if you are not sure.

Keep Everyone Safe

Do not walk through water that may be touching outlets, cords, or appliances. If you can reach the breaker panel without stepping in water, switch off power to the wet rooms. A gas smell means leaving the home right away and calling your gas utility or 911 from outside.

Limit the Spread

If a drain is backing up, stop using water everywhere in the home until it is cleared.

Write It Down

Take photos and short videos before you start cleaning anything. Note when the problem started, what you noticed first, and anything you tried, including drain chemicals. These details help with insurance and help the plumber diagnose the cause faster.

When you call, explain whether water is still flowing and what it has reached. That helps decide how urgently the repair needs to happen. Once things are calm, a walk-through of the rest of your plumbing can help you prepare for next time, including finding your main shutoff valve. Write down what happened while it is fresh.
