Call a plumber for a toilet that will not flush when simple checks inside the tank do not fix it, when the bowl is clogged and a plunger does not help, or when other drains are acting up too. Many flushing problems are small, but some point to a bigger issue.

Quick Things to Check First

Lift the tank lid and look inside:

A loose chain or a broken handle is often an easy fix. If the tank is empty, check that the shutoff valve behind the toilet is fully open.

Weak Flush or No Flush

If the tank fills but the flush is weak, the holes under the rim may be clogged with mineral buildup. A flapper that closes too fast can also cut the flush short. These problems are annoying but usually not urgent.

Clogs That Will Not Clear

If water rises in the bowl instead of going down, there is a clog. Try a flange plunger a few times. If the clog stays, stop. Repeated plunging can splash dirty water and push the clog deeper. Do not use chemical drain cleaners in a toilet.

When It Is Time to Call

Call a plumber if the toilet still will not flush after these checks, if other drains are slow or gurgling, or if it is the only toilet in your home. Water rising in a tub when you flush is a sign of a main line clog.

For problems that cannot wait, a plumber can get the toilet working again. If you rent, let your landlord or super know too.

You can reach JPR Plumbing at (833) 603-1840 for help. If other fixtures in the house are acting up too, a single visit can cover them as well.
