Stop using a clogged drain as soon as water stops going down, rises in another fixture, or comes back up dirty. Running more water into a blocked drain can cause it to overflow and may push the clog deeper into the pipe.

When Water Will Not Go Down

If a sink or tub fills and stays full, the drain is blocked. Pouring more water in will not help. Stop using that fixture, and do not pour boiling water into it. Very hot water can crack porcelain and soften some plastic pipes.

When Water Shows Up Somewhere Else

If water rises in the tub when you run the sink, or a floor drain fills when you do laundry, the clog is likely in a shared line. At that point, stop using all the fixtures connected to that line. In many cases, that means limiting water use in the whole home.

When the Water Is Dirty

Dirty or smelly water coming up from a drain may contain sewage. Stop using water in the home right away. Keep people and pets away, and wear gloves if you need to move items nearby.

When You Have Tried and It Is Not Working

It is fine to try a plunger once or twice. If the clog stays, put the plunger down. Forcing it can splash dirty water and damage seals. Mixing different drain chemicals can also create harmful fumes.

In Brooklyn apartment buildings, tell your super and neighbors if a shared line seems blocked. They may be seeing the same problem and can stop using water too.
