Fix the problems that can damage your home or affect your health first: active leaks, signs of a sewer problem, water heater issues, and shutoff valves that do not work. After those, move on to problems that waste water or cause inconvenience, such as dripping faucets, running toilets, and slow drains.

First Priority: Anything Leaking

A leak under a sink, around a toilet, or inside a ceiling can quietly rot wood, damage drywall, and grow mold. Even a small drip into a cabinet can ruin the floor of that cabinet over a few months. If you see water where it should not be, having the leak found and repaired should come first.

Second Priority: Sewer and Drain Warning Signs

Gurgling drains, sewer smells, and slow drains throughout the house can mean the main line is starting to block. A full sewer backup is messy, unhealthy, and expensive to clean up. Dealing with early signs is much easier.

Third Priority: The Water Heater and Valves

Rust or moisture around the base of the water heater, rumbling sounds, or rusty hot water can mean the tank is wearing out. Also test your main shutoff and fixture valves. A valve that will not turn is a serious problem during an emergency, so replacing it is worth doing before you need it.

Then: Drips, Running Toilets, and Slow Drains

These problems waste water and money but rarely cause damage on their own. Still, fixing them keeps small issues from turning into bigger ones. A running toilet, for example, can add a noticeable amount to your water bill every month.

To stay ahead, walk through your home every few months. Look under sinks, check around toilets, and glance at ceilings below bathrooms.
