Fix anything that can damage the house or affect your family’s health first: active leaks, signs of a sewer problem, water heater trouble, and shutoff valves that will not turn. Then work through problems that mostly waste water or cause inconvenience, like dripping faucets, running toilets, and slow drains.
Sort Your List by Risk
A simple way to prioritize is to ask what happens if you wait a month. A dripping faucet costs a little water. A slow leak inside a wall can rot framing and grow mold. A main line that is starting to clog can turn into a basement full of sewage. The bigger the possible damage, the higher it goes on the list.
Top Tier: Water Where It Does Not Belong
Stains, damp cabinets, soft floors near toilets, and puddles near the water heater all count. Even small leaks keep going 24 hours a day. If you spot moisture, finding and sealing the leak should come before anything cosmetic.
Second Tier: Sewer and Heater Warnings
Gurgling drains, sewer odors, and slow drains in several rooms can mean the main line is narrowing. On the water heater, rust at the base, rumbling, and rusty hot water point to a tank wearing out. Both are much easier to handle on your schedule than in an emergency.
Third Tier: Valves You Hope You Never Need
Test the main shutoff and the valves under sinks and behind toilets. A valve that will not turn is a serious problem when a pipe bursts.
Last come everyday annoyances. Drips, running toilets, and sluggish sinks waste water and money, but they rarely cause damage on their own. Still, fixing them stops small problems from growing.
