Fix the problems that can cause damage or health risks first. That means active leaks, drain or sewer backups, and anything near gas or electricity. Smaller issues, like a dripping faucet, still matter but can usually wait a little longer.
Start With Water That Is Escaping
Water that drips, sprays, or pools where it should not can spread fast. Many people in the Bronx live in multifamily buildings, so a leak in one unit can reach the unit below. A small leak under a sink or behind a toilet is still worth fixing right away. If water is coming from a pipe you cannot reach, a plumber who handles urgent leaks can find the source and stop it.
Next, Deal With Backups
A drain that is slow today can back up tomorrow. Backups are more than a mess. Dirty water from a toilet or floor drain can carry germs. If more than one drain is slow, or water rises in the tub when you flush, the problem may be deeper in the line.
Check the Water Heater
Water heaters can wear out without much warning. Look for water around the base, rust on the tank, or popping sounds. If you ever smell gas near a gas water heater, leave the home and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
What Can Wait a Little
Some problems are real but less urgent:
- A faucet that drips into the sink
- A toilet that runs now and then
- Low pressure at one fixture
These still waste water and can get worse, so plan to fix them soon. It also helps to know where your main water shutoff is before anything goes wrong. If you rent, ask your super where the shutoff for your unit is.
If you are not sure where to begin, a plumber can look at the whole picture with you and help you rank the repairs. A visit that covers leaks, clogs, and worn fixtures in one trip often saves time. Call JPR Plumbing at (833) 603-1840.
