Plumbing issues need emergency attention when they are causing damage right now or create a safety risk. Burst pipes, sewage backing up, a gas smell near an appliance, a home with no water, and leaks near electrical wiring are the main examples.

Water You Cannot Control

A split pipe, a broken washing machine hose, or water pouring from a ceiling can soak a room within minutes. Close the fixture valve or the main shutoff. In many East Elmhurst houses, the main is in the basement where the water line comes through the front wall. If you cannot stop the water, that is an emergency.

Wastewater in the Home

Sewage rising in a basement floor drain, tub, or toilet is a health hazard and a sign the line is blocked. Stop all water use in the house. In two-family homes, make sure the other household stops too.

Gas Near Plumbing Appliances

If you smell gas near the water heater, boiler, or stove, leave the house. Do not use light switches or phones inside. Call 911 or your gas utility once you are outside.

No Water or Leaks Near Wiring

No water in winter often means a frozen pipe, which may split when it thaws. Ask neighbors whether they have water. A street-wide outage can be checked through 311.

Water dripping into a light fixture, onto an outlet, or near the electrical panel can be a shock or fire risk. Keep people away and only use breakers you can reach from a dry spot.

Problems like a dripping faucet, a single slow sink, or a toilet that runs between flushes are worth fixing but can usually wait for a scheduled visit.

In a true emergency, quick action from a plumber can prevent a much bigger repair. Call JPR Plumbing at (833) 603-1840. For smaller needs, like a dripping faucet or a slow tub, setting a time that suits you works well.
