A drain blockage needs professional attention when a plunger or simple cleaning does not clear it, when it keeps coming back, when more than one drain is affected, or when dirty water starts coming back up. These signs mean the blockage is deeper or bigger than home tools can safely handle.

When the Basics Do Not Work

For a single sink or tub, it is reasonable to clean the stopper, pull out hair you can reach, and try a cup plunger a few times. If the water still sits there, stop. Forcing a plunger harder, or feeding a store-bought snake farther in, can damage pipes or pack the clog tighter.

When It Returns

A drain that clears for a few days or weeks and then clogs again usually has buildup lining the pipe farther down. Clearing just the top lets water through for a while, but the narrow spot remains. Cleaning the whole length of the pipe is what stops the cycle.

When More Than One Drain Is Involved

Several slow drains, gurgling in nearby fixtures, or water rising in the tub when the toilet flushes all point to the main line. That pipe is larger and deeper, and clearing it needs proper equipment.

When the Water Looks or Smells Bad

Dark, smelly water coming up from a drain may contain sewage. Stop using water in the house, keep people away from it, and get help right away.

A word on chemicals: strong drain openers often do not reach a deep clog and can harm older pipes. They also make the work more hazardous for whoever clears the drain next.

When a blockage reaches this point, having a plumber clear the line is safer and more reliable. Call JPR Plumbing at (833) 603-1840. Drains that are slow but not stopped can be handled during a visit when your schedule allows.
