If a water pipe bursts, close the main water valve immediately, open a faucet on the lowest floor to drain the pipes, and keep clear of any water near outlets or appliances. Then start drying the area and keep the water off until the pipe has been properly repaired.

Know Where the Main Is Before You Need It

The main valve is usually near the water meter where the service line enters the home. It might be in a basement, a utility room, or a crawl space. Walk over and find it today. Knowing its location can save several minutes in a real emergency.

When the Pipe Breaks

Turn the main clockwise if it has a round handle, or a quarter turn if it has a lever. If it is stuck or broken, call for help right away. Then open a cold faucet on the lowest level and flush the toilets once to empty the lines. If the break is on a hot water line, switch off the water heater too.

Safety Around Electricity

Water that reaches outlets, cords, or appliances can carry current. Do not step into it. Switch off power at the breaker only if you can reach the panel from a dry spot.

The Cleanup

Pick up standing water with towels, mops, and buckets. Move furniture, rugs, and electronics. Once power is safe, run fans and open windows. Take photos of everything for insurance before items are thrown away.

Keep in mind that hardware store clamps and tape can slow a drip, but turning the main back on with a patched pipe risks a second break under full pressure.

Once the water is under control, a plumber can splice in new pipe and check for leaks. If you have other exposed pipes, insulating them before winter can help prevent the next burst. Call JPR Plumbing at (833) 603-1840.
