Call a plumber when a toilet still will not flush after a few simple checks, when a plunger does not clear the bowl, or when other drains are acting up too. Many flushing problems are small parts inside the tank, but some point to a blocked line.
Look Inside the Tank First
Take the lid off and press the handle while you watch:
- Does the chain lift the flapper, or is it loose or tangled?
- Is there enough water in the tank?
- Does the flapper open fully and stay open long enough?
A disconnected chain or a broken handle arm is a common, simple problem. If the tank is empty or slow to fill, make sure the valve behind the toilet is fully open.
Weak Flushes
If the tank fills but the flush is weak, mineral buildup may be clogging the small holes under the rim. A flapper that drops too quickly can also cut the flush short. These are worth fixing but are rarely urgent.
The Bowl Will Not Drain
If water rises instead of going down, there is a clog. A flange plunger can clear many of them. If a few tries do not work, stop. Repeated plunging can splash dirty water and push the clog deeper. Do not use chemical drain cleaners in a toilet.
Signs It Is Time to Call
Get help if the toilet still will not flush, if other drains gurgle or slow down, or if water comes up in the tub when you flush. Those signs suggest a main line problem. It is also urgent if this is the only toilet in your home.
For a toilet that will not cooperate, the flush parts or clog can be fixed. JPR Plumbing can help at (833) 603-1840. If you rent, let your landlord know too. For smaller issues around the house, a repair visit can cover several fixes.
