It is time to schedule a plumbing inspection when you buy a home, before winter, before a renovation, after any water damage, or when the same problem keeps coming back. An inspection helps you find worn parts before they fail at a bad time.

Before You Buy

A general home inspection may only glance at the plumbing. A plumber can look more closely at the water heater, shutoff valves, visible pipes, and drains. A camera check of the sewer line can show roots, cracks, or sagging pipe. Those problems are much easier to plan for before closing than after you move in.

Before Cold Weather

Freezing weather is hard on pipes in garages, crawl spaces, and along outside walls. A fall check can catch exposed pipes, outdoor faucets that need to be shut off, and valves that have not been turned in years.

Before a Remodel

If you are updating a kitchen or bathroom, an inspection can show whether old pipes or valves should be replaced while the walls are open. It is usually simpler to do that work during a remodel than after.

When Problems Keep Returning

Repeat clogs, toilets that back up often, or a sewer smell that will not go away usually point to the main line. In many Astoria two-family homes, one main line serves both units, so a problem there affects everyone. Having the line checked with a camera and cleared can show what is really going on.

After any leak or flood, it is also worth having the water heater, valves, and nearby pipes looked at, even if everything seems fine.

For many homes, a basic check every year or two is a sensible habit. Older homes may benefit from more frequent checks.
