Before an emergency plumber arrives, stop the water if you can, keep everyone safe, and protect your belongings. A few calm steps can limit the damage and help the plumber start work faster.
Shut Off the Water
Close the valve at the fixture first, such as the one behind a toilet or under a sink. If the leak is coming from a pipe, close the main water shutoff. In many Bronx houses, it is in the basement near the front wall, close to the water meter. In apartment buildings, the super may need to help.
Stay Away From Electrical Hazards
Water and electricity are a dangerous mix. If water is near outlets, cords, or the electrical panel, stay out of the area. Turn off power at the breaker only if you can reach it without standing in water.
Protect Your Home and Belongings
Move rugs, boxes, and electronics away from the water. Use towels and buckets to catch drips. If water is coming through a ceiling, keep people out from under any spot that is sagging. Take a few photos of the damage for your records before you clean up.
Get Ready for the Visit
Clear a path to the problem area, the water shutoff, and any access panels. Lock up pets if you can. Make a short note of what you saw and when it started. Also note anything you already tried, such as a plunger or a drain cleaner. That information helps the plumber choose the safest way to work.
The plumber may call with questions or updates. If you live in a building, let the super know someone is coming so they can give access to shared areas.
